Mrs D's Harmony Workbook

 Basically...

Mrs D's Harmony Workbook is a Teacher/Student-friendly classroom and homework resource for the teaching of 4-part harmony.  The learning style bridges the gap when moving from GCSE to A level. The workbook encourages good practice when writing 4-part harmony,  aids composition and helps the student to gain an understanding of set work analysis.

Workbook Contents
Having taught A level Music for over 25 years, I recognised the need for a harmony workbook which bridged the gap between the style of learning expected at GCSE and the style of learning necessary for A level.
The Workbook grew from the worksheets I developed myself for use with my own students.
On retiring, I was persuaded by my colleagues to make these available for everybody.

My aims...

To provide ready-made teaching material for teachers.

To make 4-part harmony accessible to the student through a 'student-friendly' approach.

To bridge the gap between the style of language used at GCSE and that used at Advanced level.

To provide a good grounding in the principles of 4-part harmony writing.

To help to develop a skill which is transferrable to all areas of the curriculum,

Why 4-part harmony?

The ability to understand the basic principles of SATB 4-part harmony is one of the most useful skills which can be acquired by the music student.

It is a skill transferable to both Composition and Listening, whether this is described by the exam board as “Organisation of Sounds”, “Influences on Music, “Developing Musical Understanding” or simply as part of the “Musical Elements”.

Approach
The Workbook adopts a visual, non threatening approach.
The concepts are introduced logically, building each time on previous knowledge.

Good practice

The Workbook is essentially an introduction to 4-part harmony. It is a starting point from which you may wish to go off at a tangent or introduce further ideas.

Your syllabus may  require you to look in more specific detail at the style of J.S.Bach, for example, or you may like to introduce more chromatic harmony for a contemporary choral composition

The workbook promotes a thorough understanding of how to approach 4-part harmony, including how to  approach an Advance level Chorale question.

A word about the Cover

The Workbook has a bright sunflower yellow (wipe clean) cover to avoid getting lost, and for easy identification in the student's bag!

p.s. The sunflower used in this website was grown by my husband and won 2nd prize in a 'Tallest Sunflower' competition!
